The city of Chiusa celebrates the traditional Törggelen feast
Autumn, the season of different yellow and red shades and of the orange and green leaves that have yet to complete the season transition. Mountains and meadows create a new enchanted atmosphere, almost surreal. Surrounded by this landscape, the town of Chiusa reproposes the “Törggelen” event. This feast has always been part of the South Tyrolean tradition and it’s typical especially in the areas of the Eisack Valley, Merano and in the southern localities of Tyrol.
An event during which wine producers open their “Stube”(farmhouse kitchens) and welcome local gastronomy lovers offering them homemade dishes such as sausages with sauerkrauts, soups, boiled dumplings and much more. To accompany such dishes, wine tastings are organized in the different farmsteads, sheltered behind castles, along the mountain roads. A walk and a hiking tour dedicated to delicious flavours and amazing company, to start autumn on the right foot.
It is believed that this feast was born in the Eisack Valley, where peasants grazed the cattle and produced wine, celebrating the season of the harvest and of good wine offering a banquet consisting of the typical products of the season. In fact, the term that composes the name of the event derives from a Latin word, “torquere”, which means twisting, pressing and wringing, referred to the grape bunches wringing stage. Through the years this Latin word led to the German name “Törggelen”.
